What is FIBC (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container)?

A Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container (FIBC) or bulk bag, or big bag, is an industrial container made of flexible polypropylene woven fabric. These bags are designed for storing and transporting dry products typically in powder, granules & flacks form. Unovel offers FIBCs for the following products that are generally packed in FIBCs -

  • Chemicals

  • Fertilizers

  • Food Products

  • Construction materials

  • Pigments

  • Plastics

  • Hazardous Waste Material - UN Rated

How are FIBCs Designed?

FIBCs can be made out of either uncoated or coated polypropylene fabric. It is designed to pack around 500 kilo to 2500 kilo products. Unovel also offers FIBCs with an inner polyethylene liner in it to create additional layer protection from dust, contamination or moisture for the product filled. Generally FIBCs are used one time but at Unovel we can also offer FIBCs for multiple uses.FIBCs can have filling and discharge spouts for ease of filling and emptying the bags. FIBCs can be made of one, two or four lifting loops

Why FIBCs?
  • Unovel FIBCs are low cost solution compare to rigid containers and are also easy to store & use.

  • Can be handled, transported and stored without pallets due to integrated lifting loops

  • Can be customized to meet your needs (Size & Capacity, Filling & Discharging Features, Barrier Properties, Handling Features, etc.)

FIBC classification based on Electrostatic properties
  • Type - A - No special electrostatic safety features

  • Type - B - Type B bags are not capable of generating propagating brush discharges. The wall of this FIBC exhibits a breakdown voltage of 4 kilovolts or less.

  • Type - C - Conductive FIBC. Constructed from electrically conductive fabric, designed to control electrostatic charges by grounding. A standard fabric used contains conductive threads or tape.

  • Type - D - Anti-static FIBCs, essentially refers to those bags which have anti-static or static dissipative properties without the requirement of grounding

FIBC Filling Guidelines

It is important that FIBC bags are handled properly at every stage, right from filling, storage, to transportation. In order to fill FIBCs safely and successfully, the following guidelines should be followed. Besides, any other safe filling instructions pertaining to a specified product or facility should be adhered to.

  • Before the filling begins, ensure the empty FIBCs and lines are kept clean and stored undercover so that the extreme climatic conditions such as exposure to rain or sunlight and other accidental damage is avoided.

  • There should not be any visual damage on the FIBC that might compromise its strength.

  • If there is a discharge spout in FIBC, it should be closed or tied off before filling as per FIBC manufacturer’s instructions.

  • The product being filled in the FIBC should be compatible with the FIBC and its components.

  • The FIBC should be filled evenly and remain stable during the entire filling process.

  • The bulk bag should be suspended using all the lift loops, sleeves, etc in accordance to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • The crane hooks or bars that are used for lifting the FIBCs should not have any sharp edges or protrusions.

  • A filled FIBC should be raised and lowered smoothly.

  • The safe working load (SWL) per rated capacity should not exceed the limit for the specified FIBC.

  • Never allow any personnel to come under a suspended FIBC as it can be dangerous to life.

Emptying FIBC

The discharge of FIBC for further processing the product it contains must be performed on a station specifically designed for this purpose in order to cope with different difficulties linked to the handling of Big Bags weighing in some cases more than 1000 kg. Those stations must be equipped with a crane to lift the Big Bag, a safety cage to avoid risks related to fall, and a system to contain dust emission during discharge. Emptying is made easy by a special opening in the bottom such as a discharge spout, of which there are several options, or by simply cutting it open. While at Unovel, we take all due to care to design your bags to suit the specific usage needs, should there be any Claim situation due to quality issues, our liability will be as per the Policy in the given link ...
